Members of The Hague Convention

The following countries are all members of the Hague Convention.

These countries issue their own apostille and may request that you provide an apostille on your documents. Some of these countries still request further embassy legalisation but it is unusual.

The latest official list of countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention is published by the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) and can be viewed on their official site.

If your destination country is listed, your document will be recognised once legalised with an apostille in the UK.

What Is an Apostille?

An apostille is an official certificate that confirms a document is genuine so it can be accepted in another country that is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention.

For UK-issued documents, apostilles are provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The legalisation process depends on whether the destination country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention.

For Hague Convention countries, an apostille issued in the country where the document originates is usually sufficient for it to be accepted abroad. This removes the need for further embassy legalisation.

For countries that are not part of the Hague Apostille Convention, documents typically require both an apostille and additional embassy attestation. This is a multi-step process where the document is first legalised in its country of origin and then submitted to the relevant embassy.

Hague Members

Members of the Hague Convention issue and accept apostilles to simplify the legalisation and verification of documents between states. When a competent authority within a country issues the apostille no further authentication of the document should be required or requested. We do occasionally here that some organisations or companies within a state request further embassy attestation services but this is not required. In the event that you are asked to provide more than an apostille on a document that is to be used in a member country we recommend that you direct them to this webpage of the HCCH documentation.

Not Hague Members

Countries that are not members to the Hague Convention may request you attest your document at an embassy in the UK. If you require embassy attestation for any documents that are not detailed in the list above please visit the embassy attestation pages or contact the apostille service. We would be happy to provide you with the current processing procedure and service times for your documents.

Does my country need an apostille or embassy legalisation?

If your destination country appears in the list above, a UK apostille is sufficient. You do not need embassy legalisation. If your country is not listed, it has not signed the Hague Apostille Convention and your documents will also need to be legalised at their embassy in the UK in addition to the apostille. What UK documents can be apostilled?

The FCDO can apostille most UK-issued official documents. Common examples include birth, marriage and death certificates, degree and educational certificates, DBS and ACRO criminal record checks, company documents, court documents, notarised documents, and HMRC certificates.

Do I need to be in the UK to use your service?

Does an apostille expire?

An apostille itself does not have an expiry date – once issued, it remains valid. However, the underlying document may have its own validity period, and some foreign authorities or organisations set their own requirements on how recently a document must have been issued or apostilled.

If in doubt, check with the organisation requesting the apostille in your destination country.

Can you apostille a document issued in another country?

No. We can only apostille UK-issued documents. If your document was issued in France, India, the United States or any other country, you will need to contact the competent authority in that country – they are the only body authorised to apostille their own documents.

Do you need embassy attestation?

Any document being submitted to a fellow member of the Hague Convention should only need the apostille certificate.

Any country that has not signed the Hague Convention section relating to apostille legalisation may also request that your document is attested by the embassy.
