Members of The Hague Convention

The following countries are all members of the Hague Convention.

These countries issue their own apostille and may request that you provide an apostille on your documents. Some of these countries still request further embassy legalisation but it is unusual.

The latest official list of countries that are members of the Hague Apostille Convention is published by the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) and can be viewed on their official site.

If your destination country is listed, your document will be recognised once legalised with an apostille in the UK.

What Is an Apostille?

An apostille is an official certificate that confirms a document is genuine so it can be accepted in another country that is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention.

For UK-issued documents, apostilles are provided by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

What legalisation is required for each country?

The legalisation process depends on whether the destination country is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention.

For Hague Convention countries, an apostille issued in the country where the document originates is usually sufficient for it to be accepted abroad. This removes the need for further embassy legalisation.

For countries that are not part of the Hague Apostille Convention, documents typically require both an apostille and additional embassy attestation. This is a multi-step process where the document is first legalised in its country of origin and then submitted to the relevant embassy.

If your document has been issued in the UK, we can arrange the apostille and any further legalisation required for use in the destination country.

  • Apostilles are issued in the country where the document originates
  • UK apostilles are issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)
  • Non-Hague Convention countries usually require additional embassy attestation

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before ordering your apostille.

If your destination country appears in the list above, a UK apostille is sufficient. You do not need embassy legalisation. If your country is not listed, it has not signed the Hague Apostille Convention and your documents will also need to be legalised at their embassy in the UK in addition to the apostille. See our embassy attestation service for details.

The FCDO can apostille most UK-issued official documents. Common examples include birth, marriage and death certificates, degree and educational certificates, DBS and ACRO criminal record checks, company documents, court documents, notarised documents, and HMRC certificates.

If you are unsure whether your document qualifies, contact us before ordering.

No. We regularly handle orders from customers living overseas who need UK documents apostilled for use in their country of residence or a third country. You can place your order online and arrange for documents to be sent to us by post from anywhere in the world.

Contact us if you need guidance on sending documents from abroad.

An apostille itself does not have an expiry date – once issued, it remains valid. However, the underlying document may have its own validity period, and some foreign authorities or organisations set their own requirements on how recently a document must have been issued or apostilled.

If in doubt, check with the organisation requesting the apostille in your destination country.

No. We can only apostille UK-issued documents. If your document was issued in France, India, the United States or any other country, you will need to contact the competent authority in that country – they are the only body authorised to apostille their own documents.
